It was the War to End All Wars. Over 19 million dead in 4 years…

100 years ago the guns fell silent for the last time over the green fields of France. WWI ended on Armistice Day 1918, a fact that countless white crosses at Meuse-Argonne in mute witness stand.

WWI was a brutal conflict; the like of which is hard to imagine in modern times. Trench warfare, gas attacks, and charges across No Man’s Land into the teeth of the enemy with a stagering casualty rate to gain a few feet of ground.

Minefields still exist in France from the Great War, entire stretches of the Maginot Line still stand, and areas still bear the scars of trench warfare. Farmers regularly turn up artifacts and kit from the War still buried just beneath the surface.

100 years later we remember the War, but forget the lessons.

It was supposed to be the War to End All Wars…
